SilverSneakers covers a free basic gym membership at more than 15,000 fitness centers nationwide, along with instructor-led group classes, an on-demand video library, live virtual workouts, a mobile app, and community fitness programs outside the gym. The program comes at no extra cost through many Medicare Advantage and some Medicare Supplement plans.
Gym and Facility Access
The core benefit is a basic fitness center membership. SilverSneakers partners with major chains including LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, Gold’s Gym, Curves, and Planet Fitness, plus thousands of local and regional gyms. At participating locations, you can use standard amenities like cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, pools, and locker rooms, though the exact amenities vary by gym. One location might have a pool and sauna while another offers only a weight room and treadmills.
Your membership covers the basics at any participating gym in the network, not just one. That means you can work out near home and still use a different location when traveling. Services that go beyond the standard membership, like personal training sessions, smoothie bars, tanning, or premium spa areas, are not included. You’d pay out of pocket for those.
Group Fitness Classes
Many participating gyms offer SilverSneakers-branded group classes led by certified instructors and designed specifically for older adults at all fitness levels. The signature class lineup includes several formats:
- SilverSneakers Classic: A music-driven class combining exercises for muscular strength, range of motion, and everyday movement skills. It uses handheld weights, elastic tubing, and a ball for resistance, with a chair available for seated or standing support.
- SilverSneakers Circuit: Alternates low-impact standing choreography with upper-body strength work using weights, tubing, and a ball. A chair is available for balance support, but the focus stays on standing movement.
Additional class types cover flexibility, balance, yoga-inspired movement, and other formats depending on the location. These group classes are included in the membership at no charge. Class schedules and availability depend entirely on what each gym offers, so two gyms in the same city may have very different options.
On-Demand and Live Virtual Workouts
SilverSneakers members get access to an online video library with hundreds of workouts and wellness videos designed for people 65 and older. Categories include flexibility, mobility, balance, cardio, and strength training, all created by SilverSneakers instructors. The program also offers live online fitness classes you can join from home in real time.
This digital content is especially useful if you prefer working out at home, live far from a participating gym, or want to supplement your in-person visits. To access on-demand and live content, you need to create an account at SilverSneakers.com. Simply checking your eligibility and getting your member ID isn’t enough to unlock the digital tools.
The SilverSneakers GO App
The free mobile app (available on iOS and Android) ties the program together. Through it, you can pull up your digital membership ID to check in at any gym, search for participating locations and classes near you, and discover, schedule, and track your workouts. It’s the easiest way to manage the benefit without carrying a printed card or calling around to find classes.
FLEX Community Programs
SilverSneakers FLEX extends the program beyond traditional gyms. These are classes held at community locations like parks, recreation centers, churches, and senior centers. FLEX is designed for people who may not feel comfortable in a gym setting or who want fitness options closer to where they already spend time. Availability depends on your area.
Who Gets SilverSneakers for Free
SilverSneakers is not part of Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It’s offered as a supplemental benefit through certain Medicare Advantage plans and some Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies. Whether you’re eligible depends entirely on your specific insurance plan. You can check your eligibility at check.silversneakers.com by entering basic information. If you qualify, the site generates a 16-digit member ID and shows participating locations near you. No email address is required for the eligibility check.
If your plan includes SilverSneakers, there’s no additional premium, enrollment fee, or monthly charge for the covered benefits. You only pay if you use services that fall outside the program, like premium gym amenities or non-SilverSneakers classes.
What SilverSneakers Does Not Cover
The program has clear boundaries. Personal training, premium facility upgrades, specialized sport leagues, and any gym service beyond the basic membership tier are your responsibility. The specific line between “included” and “extra” varies by location, so it’s worth asking at the front desk what your SilverSneakers membership gets you before assuming everything is covered.
If your Medicare plan drops SilverSneakers during a plan year change (which does happen), you lose access entirely unless you switch to a plan that still includes it. Checking your plan’s benefits each year during open enrollment is the simplest way to avoid surprises.
Health Benefits Worth Knowing
The program isn’t just a gym perk. Research published in the Health Behavior and Policy Review found that regular SilverSneakers participants had significantly lower healthcare costs than non-participants. In one study, 149 participants saved a combined $319,456 in healthcare costs over a single year compared to a control group. Each group class attended was associated with an additional $22 decrease in follow-up healthcare costs after accounting for age, sex, and baseline health spending. Participation has also been linked to lower risk of depression and better outcomes for people managing diabetes.
