These terms apply when you use biologyinsights.com (the “site”), which is run by Biology Insights LLC (“we” or “us”). By using the site, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. How we handle personal information is explained in our Privacy Policy.
Who owns the content
Authors keep the copyright in their articles and license them to us. Photos and illustrations may belong to other rights holders, as shown in their credits. The site’s design, our name and logo, and material we create ourselves belong to Biology Insights LLC.
What you can do with our articles
You do not need permission to:
- read, print or save articles for your own use
- share links to articles, including on social media
- quote short passages, with credit to the author and Biology Insights and a link or the full web address of the article
- teach with articles: print copies for your students, post full articles on a password-protected course page for enrolled students, and translate them for your own students as long as each translation is labeled as unofficial and credited, provided you charge nothing beyond the cost of copying
Photos and illustrations may be included in these copies of an article. To use one on its own, ask the rights holder named in its credit.
To cite an article, include the author, the title, Biology Insights, the date it was published or last updated, and its web address.
Nothing in these terms limits uses that the law allows without permission, such as fair use.
You need permission to:
- republish or distribute articles publicly, in print or online, other than as described above
- edit or adapt an article and present it as the author’s work or ours
- use photos or illustrations outside the article they appear in
- use our name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you, a product or a service
Republishing. For the first 90 days after an article is published, we handle requests to republish it. After that, the author holds the rights, and we will put you in touch with them. Email [email protected] in either case.
Copyright complaints
If you believe something on the site infringes your copyright, email [email protected] with your contact details, a description of your work, a link to the material on our site and a statement that you own the rights or are authorized to act for the owner. We will review every complaint and remove material that infringes.
Acceptable use
When using the site, you agree not to:
- break any law or infringe anyone else’s rights
- use bots, scrapers or other automated tools to access or copy content, including to train artificial intelligence systems, except as our robots.txt file allows
- try to gain unauthorized access to the site or its systems, or interfere with how it works
- send viruses or other harmful code
- impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your connection with any person or organization
- send us spam or abusive messages
If you break these terms, we may block your access to the site or withdraw any permission we have given you.
What you send us
Pitches and drafts are covered by our Information for Contributors page. If you send us a suggestion, we may use it to improve the site without owing you anything.
Donations
Biology Insights LLC is a company, not a charity, so donations are not tax-deductible. Our payment processor emails you a receipt. You must be 18 or older, or have a parent’s or guardian’s permission, to donate. If you donated by mistake, email [email protected] within 30 days and we will refund you.
Disclaimers
Articles are for general information. They are not medical or other professional advice, and reading them does not create a doctor-patient or any other professional relationship.
We work to keep articles accurate, but research changes and mistakes happen. To the extent the law allows, we provide the site as it is and as available, without promises (warranties) of any kind, including that its content is accurate, complete or suitable for a particular purpose, or that the site will always be available.
Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, Biology Insights LLC and its owner, editors, contributors and reviewers are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits or data, arising from your use of the site, and our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to $100.
These limits do not apply to death or personal injury caused by our negligence, to fraud, or to any other liability that cannot be limited by law. If you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, they do not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.
Links and advertising
The site links to research papers and other websites that we do not control, and it shows advertising from third parties. We are not responsible for other websites or for products and services advertised on the site, and a link or an ad is not an endorsement.
Changes
We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the site. We may also update these terms; when we do, we change the date at the top, and for significant changes we post a notice on the site before they take effect. Changes do not apply to disputes that arose before they were posted.
General
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois. Disputes will be decided in the state or federal courts in Cook County, Illinois, and you and we agree to those courts’ jurisdiction, unless the law where you live lets you bring a dispute elsewhere. If you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also keep the protections of the consumer laws where you live.
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. If we do not enforce a term, we have not waived it. For contributors, the terms on our Information for Contributors page also apply.
