About Us
Most new findings in biology reach the public as a headline. The study behind it, with its methods, its caveats and its place in a longer line of research, is written for specialists. Biology Insights explains that research for readers who want more than the headline: what was found, how it was found, and how much weight the finding can bear.
What we cover
Our coverage starts with the human body, from the brain and heart to bones and skin, and reaches into health, medicine and the everyday questions of diet, sleep and fitness. It extends to the living world around us, from houseplants and gardens to wildlife and pets, and to the chemistry, physics, earth science and astronomy that shape it.
Who owns and funds us
Biology Insights is owned by Biology Insights LLC, an independent company registered in Illinois, United States, whose sole owner is our founder and editor in chief, Dr. Nora Castellan. It was founded in 2015 and is based in Chicago, Illinois.
Castellan started the site after a decade at the lab bench, where she watched careful, hedged findings from her own field of cancer cell biology reappear in the news as miracle cures. She wanted a place where readers could see the actual study: its sample size, its limits and what it would take to know more.
The owner has no other business interests in health or biology.
Biology Insights is funded by display advertising, reader donations and a general-support grant. We do not use affiliate links and do not sell any products.
Editors and reviewers
- Dr. Nora Castellan, founder, owner and editor in chief. Before founding Biology Insights, she wrote about research for university press offices and regional newspapers. To reach her, email [email protected] with “For the editor in chief” in the subject line.
- Marcus Webb, deputy editor. Webb holds a master’s degree in ecology from Colorado State University and spent six years doing field research on prairie and wetland restoration before moving into science editing. He edits our ecology, evolution and conservation coverage.
- Priya Raman, health editor. Raman holds a master of public health from Emory University and worked for seven years as a health reporter covering clinical trials and public health policy. She edits our health and medical coverage and manages expert review.
