How Long for Daxxify to Work: What to Expect

Daxxify typically produces visible results within two days of injection, with some people noticing improvement as early as the next day. That’s significantly faster than traditional options like Botox, which can take 10 to 14 days to fully kick in. But the speed of onset is only part of the story. Daxxify also lasts roughly twice as long as other neurotoxin injectables, changing the math on how often you need treatment.

What to Expect in the First Week

In clinical trials, patients reported measurable improvement in frown lines within two days of their Daxxify injection. Some saw changes by day one. This rapid onset is one of the features that distinguishes Daxxify from older botulinum toxin products, where you might wait a week or two before seeing the full effect.

By week four, 74% of clinical trial participants had achieved a significant improvement in their frown lines as rated by both their physician and their own self-assessment. So while you’ll notice the initial smoothing within a couple of days, the treatment continues to settle and refine over the first month.

When Results Peak and How Long They Last

Daxxify reaches its full effect within the first few weeks and maintains that peak for a sustained period. The median duration of results in a large Phase 3 clinical trial was 24 weeks, or about six months. That’s roughly double the three-month average for Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin.

At the six-month mark, about a third of patients still had frown lines rated as “none” or “mild.” Results do taper gradually rather than dropping off suddenly, so you won’t wake up one morning with the treatment gone. A small percentage of patients, around 8 to 12%, still showed measurable improvement at nine months after a single treatment session.

For most people, this means two treatments per year rather than the three or four typically needed with other neurotoxins. Your individual timeline will depend on factors like your metabolism, muscle strength, and the depth of your lines.

Why Daxxify Lasts Longer

Daxxify uses the same core botulinum toxin type A found in other injectables, but it’s formulated differently. Instead of using human serum albumin (a blood protein) as a stabilizer, Daxxify uses a synthetic peptide that carries a strong positive charge. This peptide binds tightly to the negatively charged surfaces of nerve cells and the surrounding tissue at the injection site.

That strong binding essentially keeps the toxin anchored in place longer, giving it more time to be absorbed into the nerve terminals where it does its work. More of the active ingredient gets taken up by the nerves, and less drifts away from the injection site. The result is a longer-lasting blockade of the muscle signals that cause frown lines.

How Daxxify Compares to Botox on Timing

The practical differences between Daxxify and Botox come down to two numbers: how fast results appear and how long they stick around.

  • Onset: Daxxify shows results in one to two days. Botox typically takes 10 to 14 days for full effect.
  • Duration: Daxxify lasts an average of six months. Botox and other neurotoxins last about three months.
  • Treatments per year: Most Daxxify patients need two sessions annually, compared to three or four with Botox.

One important note: the unit measurements for Daxxify are not interchangeable with Botox units. Daxxify uses 40 units per treatment session for frown lines, but that number can’t be directly compared to the 20 units typically used with Botox. Each product has its own potency scale.

Possible Side Effects

The side effect profile is similar to other botulinum toxin injections. In clinical trials for frown lines, headache was the most common reaction at 6%, compared to 2% in patients who received a placebo. Eyelid drooping occurred in 2% of patients, and slight facial weakness in 1%.

In a longer-term safety study spanning 84 weeks with repeat treatments, the rates stayed consistent or dropped slightly: headache at 5%, mild swelling and redness each at 2%, and eyelid drooping at 1%. Most side effects were temporary. The faster onset of Daxxify doesn’t appear to come with a higher risk of complications compared to other neurotoxin treatments.

Setting Realistic Expectations

If you’re considering Daxxify specifically because of its quick onset, you can reasonably expect to see early smoothing of frown lines within 24 to 48 hours. Full results develop over the following weeks, with peak improvement around the one-month mark. The treatment then holds steady for most people through months two, three, and four before gradually tapering.

Keep in mind that Daxxify is currently FDA-approved for two uses: moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows and cervical dystonia (a neck muscle condition). Off-label use in other facial areas may follow different timelines, and there’s less clinical data to guide expectations for those treatments. Your results will also depend on how your body metabolizes the product. People who tend to burn through Botox quickly may find the same pattern with Daxxify, though the longer baseline duration still gives them extra time between appointments.
