How Long Does a Delta-8 High Last? 2–8 Hours

A delta-8 THC high typically lasts between 3 and 8 hours, depending on how you consume it. Vaping or smoking produces the shortest experience at 3 to 5 hours, while edibles can keep you feeling effects for 4 to 8 hours. Several factors, including your dose, tolerance, and body composition, shift that window in either direction.

Duration by Consumption Method

The way delta-8 enters your body is the single biggest factor in how long the high lasts. Each method has a different absorption pathway, which changes both when you start feeling effects and how long they stick around.

Vaping or smoking delivers the fastest onset, usually within minutes, and produces a high lasting 3 to 5 hours. Because the compound enters your bloodstream through the lungs, it hits quickly but also clears relatively fast. Most people feel peak effects within 30 to 60 minutes of inhaling.

Edibles like gummies and capsules take 30 to 60 minutes to kick in because they have to pass through your digestive system first. Peak blood levels of THC from edibles arrive around three hours after you eat them. The tradeoff for that slow start is a longer ride: 4 to 8 hours of noticeable effects. This is why edibles catch people off guard. If you take more because you “don’t feel anything” after 45 minutes, the original dose may not have peaked yet.

Tinctures taken under the tongue fall in the middle, lasting roughly 4 to 6 hours. Sublingual absorption bypasses the digestive tract, so onset is faster than edibles but slower than vaping. Lozenges and similar products that dissolve in the mouth follow a comparable timeline.

How Delta-8 Compares to Delta-9 THC

Delta-8 highs are both milder and shorter than what most people experience with regular (delta-9) THC. A large survey published in the Journal of Cannabis Research found that participants consistently rated delta-8 effects as less intense and shorter-lasting. About 47% of respondents said delta-9 lasted noticeably longer, while 41% felt the duration was roughly the same. Only 13% reported delta-8 lasting longer.

If you’re familiar with traditional cannabis, expect delta-8 to feel like a lighter version that tapers off sooner. This shorter, gentler profile is one of the main reasons people choose it over delta-9 products.

What Makes Your High Last Longer or Shorter

Dose is the most obvious variable. Higher milligram amounts don’t just make the high stronger; they extend it. Animal research shows that delta-8’s measurable effects can persist for 8 to 12 hours at very high doses, compared to much shorter windows at lower ones. In practical terms, a 10 mg gummy will wear off considerably faster than a 50 mg one.

Your metabolism and body fat percentage also play a role. THC is fat-soluble, meaning it gets stored in fatty tissue and released gradually. People with higher body fat percentages may find the effects linger a bit longer, while those with faster metabolisms tend to process and clear the compound more quickly. Eating a fatty meal before consuming an edible can increase absorption, potentially intensifying and extending the experience. Tolerance matters too: regular users often report shorter, less intense highs from the same dose that floors a newcomer.

Next-Day Effects

Some people report feeling groggy or slightly “off” the morning after using delta-8, but the scientific evidence for a true THC hangover is thin. A systematic review of 20 studies covering 345 performance tests found that the majority (209 tests) showed zero next-day impairment from THC use. Only 12 tests across five older, lower-quality studies found any measurable impairment, and none of those used the gold-standard double-blind, placebo-controlled design.

The few studies that did detect lingering effects beyond 12 hours involved relatively high THC doses and poorly defined participant groups. Researchers concluded that even when a THC “hangover” does occur, it’s unlikely to be more impairing than an alcohol hangover. That said, individual experiences vary. If you’re new to delta-8 or took a large dose, giving yourself a full night of sleep before driving or doing anything demanding is a reasonable approach.

How Long Delta-8 Stays Detectable

The high wears off long before your body finishes processing delta-8. Standard drug tests look for THC metabolites, and delta-8 produces the same metabolites as delta-9. There’s no evidence that delta-8 clears your system any faster than regular THC.

For urine tests, the detection window depends entirely on how often you use it:

  • Single use: about 3 days
  • Moderate use (four times per week): 5 to 7 days
  • Daily use: 10 to 15 days
  • Heavy daily use (multiple times per day): 30 days or more

Blood tests have a much shorter window, typically detecting THC only within 2 to 12 hours of use. Heavy, chronic users are the exception: blood tests have picked up THC metabolites as far out as 30 days. If you have an upcoming drug test, delta-8 will trigger a positive result just like any other THC product.
