As right whales age, observable changes in their physical appearance and behavior provide insights into their life stage. One of the most noticeable indicators is the condition of the whale’s skin. Older right whales often exhibit increased callosity coverage, which are roughened patches of skin that appear white due to the presence of cyamids, or “whale lice.” These callosities become more pronounced with age, serving as a visual marker for researchers monitoring whale populations.

Behaviorally, aging right whales may display shifts in their social interactions and activity levels. Mature whales might engage less frequently in the energetic behaviors seen in younger individuals, such as breaching or tail-slapping.
