About Yaquina Nursery
Yaquina Nursery began its plant collection in 1963, formally opening in 1968 by Roy Foss in Newport. The nursery later relocated to its present 31-acre property in the Yachats River Valley around 2005, where it narrowed its focus to specialized plant offerings. Roy and Gerry Foss grew the business for decades, establishing its reputation for succulents and cacti. In 2021, Chris Valentin and Renee Taylor Valentin acquired the nursery, continuing its legacy.
The current owners focus on nurturing plants and community connections. They are committed to the nursery’s unique collection. This family-run operation maintains a welcoming atmosphere. The nursery also preserves the land’s natural charm.
Products and Services
Yaquina Nursery is known for its specialization in cacti and succulents, housing an estimated 175,000 plants. Within its multiple greenhouses, visitors can explore over 500 varieties, some more than 60 years old. The collection includes a wide spectrum of species, from tiny desert gems to larger, mature specimens, suitable for collectors and beginners. This focused inventory allows for in-depth knowledge and care specific to these plants.
Beyond living plants, the nursery provides a specially formulated succulent soil mix, composed of pumice, sand, and peat moss. This blend provides optimal drainage and aeration, important for cacti, succulents, and semi-succulent houseplants like Hoyas. The nursery operates as a retail outlet and serves wholesale customers across the region. Staff offer practical care advice for the plants.
