Vomit typically appears as a liquid or semi-solid substance, often containing partially digested food particles. Its texture is usually fluid, allowing for relatively easy expulsion. The typical appearance reflects a balance of ingested fluids, food, and gastric secretions.

Thick vomit, however, deviates from this norm, presenting as viscous, sticky, clumpy, or sometimes stringy or granular. This altered texture indicates a different composition, where the proportion of fluids, food particles, and other substances like mucus or blood has shifted.

Common Causes of Thick Vomit

One frequent reason for thick vomit is dehydration, which occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. A lack of sufficient fluid intake or excessive fluid loss, such as from continued vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, can concentrate the stomach’s contents.

Another factor contributing to thick vomit is the presence of excess mucus or phlegm. Mucus from conditions like post-nasal drip, respiratory infections such as colds or the flu, or allergies can drain into the stomach. Once mixed with gastric contents, this swallowed mucus makes the vomit appear thick and often stringy. The stomach lining itself also produces mucus to protect against stomach acid, and this protective mucus can become part of the expelled material.

Digested blood can also lead to a thick, granular appearance, known as coffee ground emesis. This occurs when old, coagulated blood from an upper gastrointestinal bleed mixes with stomach acid, transforming into dark brown or black particles resembling coffee grounds. This specific appearance suggests bleeding in the esophagus, stomach, or upper small intestine, requiring prompt medical evaluation.

Vomiting after prolonged periods without food or liquid intake can also result in thicker vomit. When the stomach is relatively empty, the expelled material consists primarily of concentrated gastric juices or bile, which can have a more viscous consistency than vomit containing food and ample fluids.

When to Be Concerned and What to Do

Certain signs accompanying thick vomit indicate a need for immediate medical attention. These include persistent vomiting that makes it impossible to keep down fluids, severe abdominal pain, or signs of severe dehydration such as dizziness, confusion, or significantly reduced urination. The presence of blood in the vomit, especially if it resembles coffee grounds, is a serious sign that requires urgent medical assessment.

For milder instances of thick vomit, particularly if dehydration or excess mucus is suspected, home management strategies can be employed. It is important to sip small, frequent amounts of clear fluids like water, clear broths, or oral rehydration solutions to prevent further dehydration. Initially, it is advisable to avoid solid foods and allow the stomach to settle. Resting is also beneficial during recovery.

As symptoms improve, gradually reintroduce bland foods like crackers, toast, or rice. If vomiting continues, or if any concerning symptoms develop, seeking professional medical advice is recommended.
