Understanding Why Pothos Stems Turn Yellow
Overwatering is a common reason for yellowing pothos stems, leading to a lack of oxygen around the roots. Saturated soil suffocates and rots root cells, impairing nutrient absorption. This stress often manifests as yellowing, mushy stems and leaves that may eventually turn brown.
Underwatering can also cause stems to yellow as the plant struggles to hydrate. Insufficient moisture stresses the pothos, causing it to shed older parts to conserve water. Stems might appear dry and brittle, and leaves may curl or droop before yellowing.
Nutrient deficiency, particularly nitrogen, can lead to yellowing, especially in older stems and leaves. Nitrogen is a mobile nutrient, reallocating from older growth to support newer development. This leaves older parts starved, resulting in general yellowing or chlorosis.
Inadequate light hinders photosynthesis, the process by which pothos converts light into food. Without sufficient light, the plant cannot produce enough chlorophyll, the green pigment for light absorption. This metabolic slowdown can cause stems and leaves to lose their vibrant green color and turn yellow.
Natural aging is another factor: older stems and leaves at the plant’s base may yellow and eventually drop. This is a normal part of the plant’s life cycle as it prioritizes energy for new growth. This yellowing typically affects only a few older stems and does not indicate overall plant distress.
Pests like spider mites or mealybugs can sap vital fluids, leading to weakened growth and yellowing stems. These invaders often leave visible signs like webbing or cottony masses, disrupting nutrient transport. Fungal diseases, often exacerbated by wet conditions, can also cause stem discoloration and decay.

Addressing and Preventing Yellowing Pothos Stems
Watering
Adjusting watering practices is often most impactful. Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry completely before watering; test with a finger. Ensure water drains freely to prevent waterlogging and promote root aeration. A consistent watering schedule tailored to your environment helps maintain optimal soil moisture, preventing both over and underwatering.
Light
Improve lighting if insufficient light is the cause. Move your pothos to bright, indirect light, like near an east-facing window or a few feet from south/west-facing windows. Direct sunlight can scorch leaves, so diffused light is preferable. Optimal light minimizes stress and supports robust growth. Rotate the plant periodically for even light exposure.
Nutrients
If nutrient deficiency is suspected, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring/summer). Dilute to half strength and apply every 2-4 weeks to avoid over-fertilization. Regular fertilization prevents deficiencies, providing necessary macro and micronutrients for healthy foliage and stem development. Reduce or cease fertilization during dormant winter months.
Pest and Disease Management
For pest infestations, address them promptly using insecticidal soap or neem oil. Spray affected areas thoroughly, covering both top and bottom of leaves and stems. Repeat treatments as recommended to break the pest life cycle. Fungal issues often require better air circulation, potentially a fungicide, and reduced watering.
Pruning
Pruning yellowed or dead stems is important for plant health and appearance. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruners to remove affected parts at their base or just above a leaf node. This redirects energy toward healthy growth and improves air circulation.
Potting Mix and Humidity
Using a proper potting mix with good drainage and aeration is crucial for root health. A mix containing peat moss, perlite, and pine bark is often recommended, retaining moisture while allowing excess water to escape. Always ensure the pot has drainage holes. Pothos prefers moderate to high humidity, which contributes to its overall health. A humidifier or pebble tray can increase ambient humidity. Routine inspection allows for early detection of issues.
What to Do if Yellowing Persists or Worsens
If yellowing continues despite initial adjustments, carefully inspect the root system for signs of rot. Gently remove the plant from its pot and examine the roots; healthy roots are firm and white or tan, while rotting roots appear dark brown or black and feel mushy. Trim away any affected roots with clean scissors.
Repotting may be necessary if the plant is severely root-bound or if the soil has become compacted and no longer drains well. Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one and use fresh, well-draining potting mix. This provides new nutrients and improved aeration for the roots.
If a significant portion of the plant is struggling, consider propagating healthy sections. Cuttings taken from healthy stems can be rooted in water or soil, providing a fresh start and ensuring you don’t lose the entire plant. This method can salvage your plant by creating new, vigorous individuals.
Sometimes, despite best efforts, a plant may be too far gone to recover. If the majority of stems are yellowed, mushy, or completely dried out, and new growth is absent, the plant might be beyond saving. In such cases, it may be more practical to compost the plant and start fresh.
