Energy conversion in power plants relies on transferring thermal energy to create high-pressure steam. On a planetary scale, heat transfer is the driving force behind global weather and climate systems. The uneven distribution of solar radiation, with the equator receiving more energy than the poles, creates a massive thermal imbalance. The atmosphere and the oceans constantly work to correct this imbalance by circulating heat around the globe.
Ocean currents act as a global thermal conveyor belt, transporting warm surface water from the tropics toward the higher latitudes. This movement of heat, such as the Gulf Stream, moderates the climate of coastal regions. Atmospheric circulation similarly moves heat, with the complex interactions between the ocean and atmosphere fueling weather phenomena, including the formation of rain clouds.
