The Lagoon’s Unique Structure

Over millennia, as the volcano subsided and eroded, a protective barrier reef developed, encircling the main island and forming a large, calm lagoon between the landmass and the open ocean.

This barrier reef acts as a natural breakwater, shielding the lagoon from ocean waves and currents. This creates a shallow, protected body of water where ocean sediment is largely prevented from entering. The lagoon’s shallow depth allows sunlight to penetrate to the white sandy bottom. This white sand reflects sunlight, contributing to the water’s vibrant blue and turquoise hues.

This results in minimal industrial waste and agricultural runoff, which are common sources of pollution and turbidity.

For instance, comprehensive wastewater treatment systems have been developed, including those connected by undersea pipes to small islets, ensuring proper waste management and preventing discharge into the lagoon.
