The trigeminal nerve, which detects sensations like pain and temperature, is also stimulated by certain food compounds. Beyond spicy ingredients, hot foods and beverages can also stimulate this reflex. The heat itself can trigger the same nerve receptors that capsaicin activates, leading to a similar runny nose response. Sour or acidic foods may also act as triggers for some individuals.
