The answer lies not in a caustic material or a synthetic poison, but in a precise chemical reaction that weaponizes the ant’s own biology. This method relies on a sequence of events that only begins once the ant consumes the baking soda.

The Chemical Reaction That Kills Ants

The fatal mechanism begins with the ant’s digestive system, which provides the necessary acidic environment for the reaction. Many ant species, particularly those that invade homes, possess a digestive tract that maintains a high level of acidity, often through the production of formic acid.

When the ant ingests the alkaline sodium bicarbonate, a neutralization reaction occurs deep within its gut. Ants practice trophallaxis, sharing food with nest mates, including the queen and larvae, through regurgitation.
