After cool nights, turkey buzzards can lower their body temperature by several degrees to conserve energy, sometimes by as much as 11°F. Their dark feathers are effective at absorbing heat. By spreading their wings, they increase the surface area exposed to the sun’s rays, maximizing heat absorption and warming their muscles for flight.
