Home pregnancy tests (HPTs) offer a fast, private method for determining pregnancy, but their reliability is strictly tied to a printed expiration date. This date is not arbitrary; it marks the point at which the chemical components inside the test are no longer guaranteed to function as intended. The limitation stems from the inherent instability and eventual degradation of the test’s sensitive biological materials. HPTs rely on a precise chemical reaction, and once the reagents begin to break down, the accuracy of the result is compromised.

The Essential Component That Degrades

The mechanism behind all at-home pregnancy tests is the detection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. To detect this hormone, the test strip is coated with monoclonal antibodies, which are specialized protein molecules designed to physically bind only to hCG in a urine sample.
