Why Do Camels Eat Cactus? Survival and Adaptation

Camels thrive in the planet’s most unforgiving environments: vast, arid deserts. They have developed unique strategies to survive where most other large mammals cannot. Their mouths are lined with thick, leathery tissue, providing a protective barrier against sharp spines. This robust lining covers the lips, gums, and roof of their mouth, shielding sensitive areas during chewing.

Further protection comes from numerous cone-shaped papillae projecting from the lining of their mouth and tongue. These hardened, finger-like structures are composed of keratin, a tough protein, and help guide and crush spiny plant material while preventing injury. These papillae effectively maneuver prickly cactus pads, allowing the camel to process them without significant damage.

Their powerful jaws and robust teeth are well-suited for grinding tough, fibrous plant matter. Molars are broad and flat, designed to efficiently pulverize cactus, breaking down its structure and making it easier to digest. This combination of protective mouth lining, specialized papillae, and strong dentition allows camels to access vital resources within cacti.
