The Body’s Immediate Reaction to a Bite

This disruption increases the likelihood of scar formation. The severity of the bite and the insect type also play a role. Bites from certain insects or intense allergic reactions can lead to greater tissue damage and inflammation, raising the risk of scarring. Minimizing Scarring

To reduce the likelihood or severity of scarring from bug bites, avoiding scratching is important. Alleviate itching by applying topical creams containing antihistamines or hydrocortisone, or use a cold compress. Keeping the bite area clean with mild soap and water helps prevent secondary infections that can complicate healing. Keeping the wound moist with petroleum jelly or other moisturizers can promote optimal healing and prevent scab formation, as wounds with scabs may take longer to heal. Once initial healing has occurred, protecting the area from sun exposure is beneficial. Sun exposure can worsen scars by causing hyperpigmentation.
