Lenticels are not true pores but areas where the outer bark, or periderm, is interrupted. They consist of loosely packed, unsuberized cells, which lack the waxy substance found in most bark cells. This cellular structure creates small air spaces, allowing for gas exchange.

Lenticels form early in the tree’s development from the phellogen, or cork cambium, which produces bark. As the tree grows, lenticels enlarge and become more prominent. While their configuration varies among birch species, they consistently facilitate atmospheric connections.

The Function of Lenticels
