Sea lions are marine mammals that navigate both ocean waters and coastal lands. Many populations of these animals are classified as endangered or threatened. An endangered species designation indicates a very high risk of extinction in the wild. Understanding the challenges sea lions encounter is important for conservation efforts.
Depletion of Food Sources
Sea lions are carnivores that rely on a diverse diet of fish and cephalopods, including sardines, anchovies, hake, herring, squid, and octopus. An adult sea lion typically consumes about 5% to 8% of its body weight in food daily. Overfishing by commercial fisheries directly reduces the availability of these prey species, creating competition for marine resources. This scarcity can force sea lion mothers to travel farther from their rookeries in search of food, sometimes leading to the abandonment and starvation of their pups. Bycatch, where non-target species are caught in fishing gear, can further reduce the abundance of fish populations that sea lions depend on.
Degrading Their Homes
Human activities are altering and contaminating the spaces sea lions inhabit. Coastal development encroaches upon and disturbs haul-out sites, which are resting areas, and breeding grounds. Marine pollution further degrades their habitat and affects their health. This includes plastic debris, chemical runoff, and oil spills.
Plastic pollution poses a direct threat, with sea lions becoming entangled in discarded items like packing straps, nets, and fishing lines. This can lead to severe injury, starvation, or drowning. Ingesting plastic can also cause internal obstructions or lacerations.
Chemical runoff, such as persistent organic pollutants like DDT and PCBs, contaminates the marine environment and accumulates in sea lion tissues, predisposing them to diseases and compromising their immune systems. Oil spills, even small ones, can physically coat sea lions, leading to hypothermia, ingestion of toxic compounds during grooming, and internal organ damage.
A Changing Ocean Environment
Environmental shifts in the ocean, driven by climate change, affect sea lion survival. Ocean warming directly influences the distribution and abundance of sea lion prey species, as many fish move to cooler, deeper waters, making them less accessible. This shift can result in food scarcity, particularly evident during events like El NiƱo, which have been linked to mass starvation among sea lion pups. Ocean acidification also poses a threat by impacting the marine food web, especially organisms with shells or skeletons that form the base of many ecosystems. The increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as powerful storms, can directly harm sea lion pups and reduce their chances of survival.
Direct Human Threats
Sea lions face direct physical harm and mortality from human interactions. Entanglement in active or discarded fishing gear, including nets, lines, and traps, is a widespread problem. These entanglements can cause deep wounds, lead to limb amputations, or prevent sea lions from hunting effectively, resulting in starvation or drowning. Vessel strikes from boats and ships, ranging from large commercial vessels to recreational watercraft, are a significant cause of injury or death, often going unnoticed by operators.
Historically, extensive hunting practices severely depleted sea lion populations for their fur, blubber, and meat, contributing to their low numbers into the 20th century. While protective measures, such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, have allowed some populations to recover, these historical impacts continue to influence their current status. Despite legal protections, illegal hunting and intentional harm still occur in some regions, driven by perceived competition for fish or other conflicts with human activities.
