Only the healthiest individuals can allocate sufficient carotenoids to both immune defense and elaborate feather coloration. Similarly, melanin pigments, responsible for black, brown, and grey hues, can also signal condition, though the specific information conveyed by melanin-based colors is less clearly understood. Therefore, a male’s brilliant plumage is a reliable indicator to females that he possesses the vigor and resources necessary to contribute to successful offspring.

Such costs create a balance, ensuring that only individuals in good condition can afford to maintain these showy displays.
