The sight of a pink dolphin gliding through water might seem like something from a fantasy, yet these unique creatures truly exist in various parts of the world. The Amazon River Dolphin
The most well-known of these pink dolphins is the Amazon River Dolphin, scientifically known as Inia geoffrensis. This freshwater species, also called the boto or bufeo, is native to the vast river systems of South America, including the Amazon and Orinoco basins. It is the largest species of river dolphin, with adult males reaching lengths up to 2.5 meters and weighing over 180 kilograms.
Unlike their marine counterparts, Amazon River Dolphins possess a distinctive flexible neck, allowing them to turn their heads 90 degrees, which aids in navigating through submerged trees and dense underwater vegetation. They also have large, paddle-shaped pectoral fins that can move independently, enabling remarkable agility to weave through flooded forests while hunting. These dolphins primarily rely on echolocation to find their prey in the murky, sediment-rich waters of their habitat.
The Science Behind Their Pink Color
The pink coloration of the Amazon River Dolphin is a trait developing as the dolphins mature. These dolphins are typically born gray and gradually acquire their pink or pinkish-gray coloration with age. The intensity of their pink hue can vary significantly, ranging from a dull gray-pink to a vibrant flamingo pink.
A primary reason for their color lies in the presence of numerous capillaries close to the surface of their skin. Increased blood flow through these vessels, often triggered by excitement, physical activity, or even changes in water temperature, causes them to flush a brighter pink, similar to how humans blush. Beyond the Amazon Other Pink Dolphins
While the Amazon River Dolphin is the most prominent example of a naturally pink dolphin, other instances of pinkish-hued dolphins exist, though for different reasons. Some typically gray or white dolphin species, such as bottlenose dolphins, can exhibit a pinkish-white appearance due to albinism.
