Placing cool cucumber slices over the eyes is a common home remedy for tired, puffy eyes. This practice is supported by a straightforward scientific basis. The immediate relief and temporary cosmetic benefits stem from a combination of the cucumber’s physical properties and its underlying biochemical composition, providing both a physical mechanism to reduce swelling and a gentle delivery of beneficial compounds.

The Physical Mechanism of Relief

The most immediate benefit comes from the cucumber’s high water content (over 95%) and naturally cool temperature. When chilled, the slices act as an effective cold compress. This application of cold temperature causes vasoconstriction, the narrowing of superficial blood vessels.

The narrowing of these vessels reduces the flow of blood and accumulated fluid, directly combating puffiness (periorbital edema). Since dark circles can be caused by dilated blood vessels showing through the thin skin, this constricting effect can also temporarily lessen their appearance.
