Vertical pupils are particularly effective at maximizing stereopsis for vertical contours, such as an upright mouse.
They also optimize the use of blur, where objects at different distances appear out of focus. For horizontal contours, like the ground, the vertical slit allows for a wide-open pupil, maximizing blur and aiding in distance estimation along the terrain.
