Which Animals Have Rectangular Pupils?

The pupil, the dark opening in the center of the eye’s iris, plays a fundamental role in vision by regulating the amount of light that enters the eye. Like a camera’s aperture, the pupil dilates in dim conditions to allow more light in and constricts in bright light to reduce light intake, optimizing retinal illumination and preventing glare. While human pupils are typically round, the animal kingdom exhibits diverse pupil shapes, including vertical slits, horizontal slits, and various other forms. These shapes are not random; they represent specialized adaptations that cater to an animal’s specific ecological niche and visual requirements.

Animals with Rectangular Pupils

A distinctive pupil shape, the horizontal rectangle, is observed in several species, most notably among grazing animals. Common examples include goats, sheep, horses, and deer. These pupils appear as horizontally elongated slits, becoming more pronouncedly rectangular in bright light. This unique eye structure is typically found in prey animals, including many herbivores.

This pupil shape provides an exceptionally wide panoramic field of view, often extending to nearly 320-340 degrees. This broad lateral vision allows animals to scan their surroundings for predators without turning their heads, crucial for detecting threats approaching from various directions across the ground.

The horizontally elongated pupil also manages light intensity, especially in bright, open environments. It maximizes light intake along the horizontal plane, where the horizon and ground are visible, while reducing glare from overhead light. This helps maintain clear vision and prevents dazzling, beneficial for animals grazing with heads down.

A remarkable adaptation is their ability to maintain horizontal alignment with the ground, even while grazing. Animals like goats and sheep can rotate their eyes by approximately 50 degrees or more (cyclovergence) to keep pupils parallel to the horizon. This ensures their wide field of view and predator detection capabilities are not compromised while feeding.
