Essential Climate and Light Requirements
Papaya cultivation demands consistently warm, subtropical or tropical conditions to ensure continuous growth and fruit production. The optimal temperature range for the plant is between 70°F and 90°F (21°C and 32°C). Temperatures dropping below 59°F (15°C) will slow the plant’s growth significantly, and temperatures above 90°F (32°C) may cause flowers to drop, reducing fruit set.
Papaya plants are damaged or killed when temperatures fall below 31°F to 32°F (around -0.6°C to 0°C). Even if the air temperature remains above freezing, root growth slows considerably if soil temperatures drop below 60°F (15.5°C).

Planting the herb in partial shade is detrimental, as it reduces the plant’s overall vigor and prevents the fruit from developing its full sugar content.
