Prime Opal-Bearing Locations

Nevada stands as a prominent state for opal discoveries, particularly in Humboldt County’s Virgin Valley. This region is renowned for its precious black fire opal. These opals can display vibrant reds, greens, and blues, often embedded within volcanic ash deposits. Virgin Valley also yields common opal and hyalite, a colorless, glass-like variety.

Water is useful for cleaning off specimens, as it can help reveal the opal’s true color and play-of-color. Identifying raw opal often relies on its waxy luster, conchoidal (shell-like) fracture, and sometimes its distinct color or transparency.
