However, areas under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), such as the Modoc National Forest, have specific, mandatory permit systems. The Modoc National Forest requires a free-use permit for personal collection, which strictly limits the amount to approximately 100 pounds, or the equivalent volume of two five-gallon buckets, per permit. A maximum of three permits are allowed per person annually, and collectors must obtain this authorization from the local forest office before beginning any collection.
State Parks and National Parks maintain a strict prohibition on the removal of any natural resources, including rocks and minerals. Entering these protected areas with the intent to collect will result in a violation of federal or state law. Finally, if obsidian is found on private land, written permission from the landowner is required before any material can be collected.
Essential Tips for Identifying and Safely Collecting Obsidian
Successful identification of obsidian relies on recognizing its unique physical characteristics, which distinguish it from other dark volcanic rocks. The most telling feature is its glassy, highly reflective surface, which results from its non-crystalline structure. When broken, genuine obsidian will exhibit a conchoidal fracture, producing smooth, curved surfaces similar to the inside of a seashell, with edges that can be sharper than a surgical scalpel.
While pure obsidian is often a deep black, collectors should look for varieties like mahogany, which is black with reddish-brown streaks, or snowflake obsidian, characterized by white, radial clusters of cristobalite crystals. To locate surface finds, search for pieces that catch and reflect the sunlight, as their glass-like quality makes them stand out against duller surrounding rocks.
Safety must be the priority when handling this material due to its extreme sharpness. Collectors should always wear thick leather gloves to protect their hands from unexpected cuts and sturdy boots for navigating uneven, rocky terrain. It is also recommended to wear safety glasses, particularly if gently tapping pieces with a small rock hammer to reveal a fresh, clean fracture.
