This process, known as breaking apical dominance, signals the plant to activate the two buds directly below the cut. Instead of one single stem growing taller, two new stems begin to grow outward from the node. Make a clean cut using sharp shears or scissors about one-quarter inch above a healthy node. Cutting too far below the node leaves a dead stem segment that can invite disease, while cutting too close may damage the dormant buds.

This light pruning removes the growing tip, preventing that stem from flowering and encouraging side branching.
When a larger harvest is desired, such as for drying or making infusions, an aggressive cut benefits the plant’s long-term health. Using clean shears, remove entire stems down to just above a lower node. Never remove more than one-third of the plant’s total height at any one time. Harvesting up to one-third prevents severe shock, allowing the plant to recover quickly and channel energy into new lateral growth. The best time for a major harvest is just before the plant begins to flower, typically when the stems are about six to eight inches tall. Once the plant produces flower buds, it diverts energy away from leaf production and flavor compounds, sometimes resulting in a slightly bitter taste. A severe cutback in mid-summer, after the first flush of growth, encourages a strong second growth cycle. A final, major harvest can be performed before the first hard frost sets in.
