Where Is the Longitudinal Fissure Located?

Defining the Longitudinal Fissure

The longitudinal fissure is a prominent, deep groove that visually separates the human brain into two distinct halves. It is also known as the cerebral fissure, great longitudinal fissure, or interhemispheric fissure. This fissure runs along the top surface of the brain, dividing the left and right cerebral hemispheres.

While this fissure creates a significant physical separation, it does not completely disconnect the two hemispheres. It serves as a boundary, allowing the cerebral hemispheres to maintain individuality within a unified brain. This deep groove is characteristic of the vertebrate brain, particularly prominent in humans.

Precise Anatomical Placement

The longitudinal fissure is located along the midline of the brain, running from the front to the back of the cerebrum. This deep indentation extends across the entire medial aspect of the cerebral hemispheres. Visually, it appears as a deep valley running through the center of the brain’s upper surface.

The depth of this fissure varies; while it extends deeply at the front (frontal lobe region) and back (occipital lobe region), its separation is only about half as deep in the middle region. This is because the hemispheres are joined by a large band of white matter nerve fibers, the corpus callosum, which resides beneath the fissure and connects the two sides. Within the longitudinal fissure, a crescent-shaped fold of dura mater, a protective membrane covering the brain, called the falx cerebri, descends vertically. This fold aids in the physical separation and stabilization of the cerebral hemispheres.

Functional Significance for Brain Hemispheres

The physical separation created by the longitudinal fissure is significant due to the concept of hemispheric specialization, also known as lateralization. This refers to the tendency for certain cognitive functions to be more dominant in one hemisphere than the other. For example, the left hemisphere is generally associated with language skills, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking, while the right hemisphere tends to be more involved in creativity, spatial awareness, and nonverbal communication.

Despite this specialization and the physical divide, the brain’s two hemispheres are not isolated; they communicate extensively. This communication occurs primarily through the corpus callosum, a large bundle of nerve fibers located deep within the longitudinal fissure. This neural bridge, consisting of approximately 200-300 million axonal projections, ensures that information processed on one side of the brain can be shared with the other. The fissure, therefore, facilitates the independent yet coordinated operation of these two halves.
