Where Are the Ethmoid Sinuses Located?

The ethmoid sinuses are a group of air-filled spaces situated between the eyes, just behind the bridge of the nose. Unlike other sinuses that are large, single cavities, the ethmoid sinuses consist of multiple small, interconnected air cells, often described as having a honeycomb-like structure. These cells are housed within the ethmoid bone, a spongy, cube-shaped bone that forms part of the nasal cavity roof and the medial walls of the eye sockets.

Adults have three to 18 ethmoid air cells on each side of the face, collectively holding about 2 to 3 milliliters of air. They are divided into anterior, middle, and posterior groups, reflecting their different drainage pathways into the nasal cavity. What Do Ethmoid Sinuses Do?

Ethmoid sinuses condition the air we breathe before it reaches the lungs. The mucous membranes lining these sinuses produce mucus, a sticky substance that helps trap dust, pollen, pollutants, and microorganisms, preventing them from entering deeper into the airways.

Tiny hair-like structures called cilia, present on the mucosal lining, continuously move this mucus and its trapped particles towards the nasal cavity and throat, where they can be swallowed or expelled. Beyond air conditioning and protection, the ethmoid sinuses also reduce the overall weight of the skull due to their hollow nature. They also enhance voice resonance, contributing to the distinct quality of an individual’s voice.

Common Ethmoid Sinus Issues

The ethmoid sinuses, like other paranasal sinuses, can become inflamed or infected, a condition known as ethmoid sinusitis. Their small, complex structure and narrow drainage pathways can make them susceptible to blockages and subsequent infection. When inflammation occurs, mucus can become trapped, creating an environment conducive to the growth of germs.

Symptoms of ethmoid sinusitis include pain or pressure between the eyes or at the bridge of the nose. Other indications include headaches, nasal congestion, a runny nose, and post-nasal drip. Although these issues can cause discomfort, they often resolve with appropriate care.
