The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, also known as the Yarlung Tsangpo Gorge, is the deepest canyon on Earth. Located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China’s Himalayas, it is carved by the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Its maximum depth is approximately 6,009 meters (19,714 feet). The canyon stretches for about 505 kilometers (314 miles).
Understanding Canyon Depth Measurement
Measuring canyon depth involves complexities, as different criteria exist. Depth can be assessed based on the difference between the river surface and the highest surrounding peaks, or as an average depth along its course. The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is recognized as the deepest on land because its measurement considers the vertical distance from the highest surrounding peaks, such as Namcha Barwa (7,782 meters) and Gyala Peri (7,294 meters), down to the river flowing at its base.
Other Remarkable Canyons
While the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is the deepest, other canyons are also notable worldwide. The Grand Canyon in the United States, carved by the Colorado River, is over 1,857 meters (6,093 feet) deep and extends for 446 kilometers (277 miles). In Peru, the Colca Canyon is deep, with depths around 3,400 meters (11,155 feet), making it one of the deepest in the Americas. Nepal is home to the Kali Gandaki Gorge, which is exceptionally deep, with over 5,500 meters (18,000 feet) vertical difference between the river and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
The Yarlung Tsangpo’s Unique Character
Beyond its remarkable depth, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon has a unique character shaped by its extreme environment. The canyon experiences a wide range of climates, from subtropical at lower elevations to Arctic-like at higher altitudes. This diversity supports a rich ecosystem. It hosts thousands of plant species, including rare timber plants, vascular plants, bryophytes, and fungi.
The canyon also hosts diverse animal life, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects, some rare and endangered. How Canyons Form
Canyons primarily form through erosion, often by a river. As a river flows, it gradually cuts down through rock layers, carrying away sediment. This erosive power is effective where elevation difference is significant and softer rock layers are interspersed with harder ones.
Tectonic uplift also plays a role. Tectonic plates moving cause land to rise. As land elevates, rivers maintain their course, incising deeper into the terrain. This combination of river erosion and geological uplift over millions of years sculpts the steep-sided valleys known as canyons.
