The camellia, often called the “Queen of Winter Flowers,” is an evergreen shrub prized for its glossy foliage and spectacular blooms that appear when most of the garden is dormant. Successful growth depends entirely on the initial choice of planting location. The ideal site must meet a delicate balance of light, soil, and environmental protection. This careful selection process is the single most determining factor in the long-term health and flowering success of the bush.

Sunlight and Shade Requirements

Camellias require light to produce their signature flowers, but the intensity of that light is a critical consideration. The best location provides bright, filtered shade throughout the day, mimicking the understory of a woodland setting. Direct, harsh afternoon sun, especially in warmer climates, will stress the plant and can cause the leaves to scorch, appearing yellow or bleached instead of deep green.

A spot that receives morning sun followed by afternoon shade is optimal for most varieties. The morning sun encourages flowering without the intense heat that can damage the plant’s evergreen leaves and tender buds. Camellia japonica varieties are particularly sensitive to direct sun and perform best in dappled light.

Camellia sasanqua is more tolerant of sun exposure, and some cultivars can thrive in full sun once they are well-established. However, even these types benefit from protection from the fiercest midday heat. The goal is to provide enough light for robust flower production without exposing the plant to the damaging effects of intense solar radiation.

Soil Composition and Drainage

The camellia is an acid-loving plant, and the composition of the soil is important for site selection. These shrubs require a highly acidic growing medium, with an ideal pH range between 5.5 and 6.5. Soil that is too alkaline will prevent the camellia from absorbing necessary micronutrients, leading to yellowed leaves, a condition known as chlorosis.

Beyond acidity, the soil must be extremely well-drained, as camellias will not tolerate “wet feet” or standing water. Poor drainage is a common cause of root rot, which can quickly kill the plant. Before planting, a simple drainage test can be performed by digging a hole and observing how quickly water percolates through the soil.

If the native soil contains heavy clay, it must be amended extensively to improve porosity and acidity. Working in organic materials such as peat moss, ground aged bark, leaf mold, or composted manure will help create the loose, humus-rich environment camellias prefer. It is also beneficial to plant the root ball slightly higher than the surrounding grade to ensure water flows away from the trunk.

Microclimate and Environmental Protection

Selecting a site that provides protection from environmental extremes helps the camellia thrive. Exposure to harsh winter winds is particularly damaging, as it causes rapid water loss from the large, evergreen leaves, leading to desiccation when the ground is frozen and the roots cannot replenish moisture. This “freeze-drying” effect can cause significant foliage burn and bud drop.

Planting the bush near a structure, such as a north- or east-facing wall, can offer an effective windbreak. The wall buffers temperature fluctuations and shelters the plant from the most damaging winter gusts. Similarly, an overhead canopy of larger trees provides year-round protection, moderating temperatures and filtering light.

Avoid planting camellias in low-lying areas where cold air settles, creating a “frost pocket”. A location that receives sudden, intense morning sun after a cold night can be detrimental. The rapid warming can injure the leaves and buds, so a site with protection from the early morning sun is preferred in colder regions.

Practical Spacing and Layout

Considering the mature size of the shrub determines the long-term viability of the planting location. Many common Camellia japonica varieties eventually grow into substantial shrubs, reaching heights of 6 to 12 feet and a similar spread. Camellia sasanqua varieties can also be large, ranging from low, spreading forms to upright shrubs up to 14 feet tall.

To prevent overcrowding and ensure good air circulation, space camellias according to their mature width, often a minimum of 5 to 6 feet between plants. A distance of at least 4 feet from a building foundation is recommended to prevent future issues with structural contact. The planting hole should be dug at least twice as wide as the root ball to give the shallow, fibrous roots ample room to spread into loosened soil.

For gardeners with limited space or poor native soil, planting in a large container offers a suitable alternative location. The container must be large enough to accommodate the root system for several years and must have excellent drainage holes. This approach allows for greater control over the soil medium and provides the flexibility to move the plant to a sheltered location during extreme weather.
