Guatemala represents another significant source of jadeite, especially in the Motagua River valley. Indigenous cultures like the Olmec and Maya treasured Guatemalan jadeite for ritual objects and jewelry, and modern discoveries continue in this region. While not as commercially prolific as Myanmar, Guatemala produces jadeite with a spectrum of colors, including the unique “Olmec blue.”
Japan hosts jadeite occurrences, particularly in the Itoigawa and Omi regions of Niigata Prefecture, with deposits including white, green, and lavender varieties. Although not commercially mined like in Myanmar or Guatemala, Japanese jadeite holds cultural significance, and some high-quality material exists. Russia has deposits in areas like the Polar Urals and Khakassia. Identifying jadeite within the host rock can be challenging, as it is often encased in stone. Miners may rely on visual cues like surface coloration or listen for a distinctive sound when tapping rocks to locate the gemstone. After extraction, raw jadeite undergoes sorting and evaluation based on its color, translucency, and texture, as only a small portion is suitable for high-quality use.
