The Soybean Origin
Soy wax originates from soybeans, which are the seeds of the Glycine max plant, an annual legume. The plant grows erect and branching, typically reaching 40 centimeters to over 2 meters in height. Soybean plants have trifoliate leaves and produce self-fertilizing flowers that are white or various shades of purple. After flowering, the plant forms elongated, hairy pods, each commonly containing two to three oval or round seeds.
The cultivation of soybeans is extensive across the globe, with the Americas being the leading continent for production, accounting for over 87% of the world’s supply. The United States, Brazil, and Argentina are the top three producers, followed by countries like China and India in Asia. Soybeans are harvested mechanically once the leaves drop and the seed moisture content reaches about 13% for proper storage. This widespread cultivation provides a consistent and renewable source for soy wax production.
Making Soy Wax
The transformation of soybeans into soy wax involves several distinct steps, beginning with the harvested beans. Initially, the soybeans are cleaned to remove impurities, then cracked open to expose their inner core, which is rich in oil. The outer shells are removed through dehulling, and the remaining inner portions are rolled into fine flakes. These flakes are then used for soybean oil extraction.
Oil extraction from the flakes can be accomplished through methods such as mechanical pressing or solvent extraction. The extracted oil undergoes purification to eliminate residual impurities. The oil, which is liquid at room temperature, is converted into a solid wax through a process called hydrogenation. During hydrogenation, hydrogen is introduced to the oil, altering its chemical structure by converting unsaturated fatty acids into saturated ones, which significantly increases the oil’s melting point and solidifies it. This process yields a wax suitable for various applications, including candle making.
Why Soy Wax is Popular
Soy wax is favored for several characteristics that differentiate it from other wax types. One advantage is its natural, plant-based origin from soybeans, making it a renewable resource. This aligns with an increasing consumer preference for products derived from sustainable sources. Soy wax is also biodegradable, simplifying cleanup of spills with soap and water.
The burning properties of soy wax contribute to its popularity. It burns at a lower temperature than traditional paraffin wax, resulting in a longer burn time for candles of comparable size. Soy wax produces less soot and fewer airborne pollutants when burned, leading to a cleaner emission compared to some other waxes. This cleaner burn can improve indoor air quality.
