Geographical Range
Tiger fish are widely distributed across the African continent, found in warmer, well-oxygenated freshwater systems. The Hydrocynus vittatus, often called the African tiger fish, is particularly widespread, inhabiting major river basins such as the Niger, Nile, Congo, and Zambezi. This species also thrives in large lakes including Tanganyika, Mweru, Bangweulu, and Kariba. The Goliath tiger fish (Hydrocynus goliath) has a more restricted range, primarily found within the Congo River Basin, including the Lualaba River and Lake Upemba, and also in Lake Tanganyika. Smaller populations of other tiger fish species exist across African river systems, from northern to southern Africa.
Aquatic Habitats
Within their geographical range, tiger fish inhabit specific aquatic environments. They prefer large, flowing river systems, expansive lakes, and associated deltas. These predatory fish are often found in highly oxygenated, fast-flowing waters like deep river channels, enabling strong swimming for capturing prey in turbulent conditions.
While primarily in open water, tiger fish also navigate strong currents. During rising water levels, they may extend into temporary flooded areas, side channels, and backwaters, though they do not typically undertake long-distance migrations onto floodplains. Environmental Preferences

While often in clear waters, tiger fish adapt to more turbid conditions, particularly where receding floodwaters meet main river channels, which may disorient prey. Abundant prey species like cichlids, gobies, and sardine significantly influence their distribution, as tiger fish are primarily piscivorous. Structural elements like submerged vegetation, rocks, and fallen trees provide cover and ambush points for these predators.
