Nests are typically situated between 15 and 30 feet above the ground, though they can be found anywhere from 5 to 60 feet high.
The birds thrive in semi-open country, such as riparian thickets, farm fields, and open woodlands. Magpies frequently integrate man-made structures into their nesting strategy, particularly in urban areas where tall, sturdy trees may be scarce. They will readily build their large stick nests on utility poles, communication towers, or the ledges of deserted buildings, utilizing any available height advantage for security. The location is chosen not just for height, but also to be near foraging grounds, ensuring the parents have a reliable food source to sustain their feeding schedule.
Nest Structure and Materials

This outer shell is constructed from a dense collection of coarse twigs and sticks. It is sometimes reinforced with thorny branches to deter aerial and mammalian threats.
Inside this fortress-like dome is the deep, cup-shaped bowl formed to cradle the clutch. This inner cup is first cemented with a layer of mud or manure, which dries to create a firm, durable base. The completed nest is substantial, often measuring 20 to 30 inches in both width and height, and features a side entrance that keeps the eggs hidden from view.
