Stone crabs are a highly sought-after seafood delicacy, recognized for their distinctive black-tipped claws and the unique ability to regrow them after harvest. These crustaceans play an important role in their marine habitats, contributing to the balance of coastal ecosystems. Geographic Range
Stone crabs inhabit coastal and offshore waters across a significant portion of the Western Atlantic Ocean. Their broad distribution extends from North Carolina down to Belize, encompassing the entire Florida Peninsula, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Yucatan Peninsula. They are also found in various parts of the Caribbean, including Jamaica and Cuba.
The commercial harvesting of stone crabs is predominantly centered in Florida, which accounts for approximately 99% of all stone crab landings in the United States. Within Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the western coast are primary hubs, with significant populations found in areas like the Florida Keys, Tampa Bay, and the Everglades. Beyond Florida, stone crabs are also present in the salt marshes of South Carolina and Georgia, and westward into Texas. Two main species, the Florida stone crab (Menippe mercenaria) and the Gulf stone crab (Menippe adina), are recognized.
Ideal Living Environments
Stone crabs thrive in warm, shallow coastal waters, though they can also be found in deeper offshore benthic environments, sometimes at depths up to 200 feet. They commonly inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms, rocky outcrops, and oyster reefs, where they seek refuge and forage.
Seagrass beds are another preferred habitat, offering shelter and food. Stone crabs are known to dig burrows or find existing holes under rocks, shell fragments, or near dock pilings, providing protection from predators and a secure place for molting. The availability of food, such as mollusks, worms, and other small crustaceans, is a significant factor in their habitat selection.
Environmental factors like salinity and temperature are important determinants of their presence. Adult stone crabs can tolerate a broad range of salinities, typically from 5 to 40 parts per thousand (ppt), but prefer slightly higher concentrations, such as 10 to 35 ppt. Larval stages, however, require high salinity, with optimal survival observed around 30 ppt. Similarly, adult stone crabs can endure temperatures between 8°C and 38°C, with optimal survival occurring around 25°C. Larval development thrives in warm waters, with 30°C identified as an optimal temperature for their survival.
