Where Are Pawpaws Grown? From Wild to Commercial

The pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a small deciduous tree that yields the largest edible fruit native to North America. This fruit offers a unique flavor profile described as a blend of banana, mango, and pineapple, with a creamy, custard-like texture. It is the only temperate-zone species within the otherwise tropical Annonaceae family, which includes custard apples and soursop.

Defining the Native Habitat

The pawpaw’s native range is extensive, covering much of the humid continental climate zone of the Eastern and Midwestern United States. This geographical footprint stretches from the southern edge of Ontario, Canada, and Western New York, running southward along the Appalachian mountains. The range extends as far south as the Florida panhandle and reaches westward into eastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska.

Historically, wild pawpaw patches have thrived primarily in rich, deep bottomlands, river valleys, and floodplains. They prefer areas with deep, fertile soil and adequate moisture, often establishing themselves as understory trees in hardwood forests. These clonal patches, which grow from root suckers, were a reliable seasonal food source for indigenous peoples and early American settlers. While the tree is native to 26 states, it is rarely found near the immediate Atlantic or Gulf coasts, preferring inland, humid conditions.

Essential Growing Conditions

The pawpaw’s habitat is defined by specific environmental requirements that limit its spread beyond the eastern half of the continent. Although the tree can tolerate winter temperatures down to about -20°F, it needs a minimum of 400 chilling hours (time spent below 45°F) to break dormancy and flower. This chilling requirement prevents it from thriving in the deep South. Its need for warm, long summers with at least 150 frost-free days restricts its western expansion into the cooler, drier Rocky Mountain regions.

Soil composition is another limiting factor, as the pawpaw requires deep, fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (typically between 5.5 and 7.0). The tree has a deep and fragile taproot, which makes it intolerant of waterlogged or heavy clay soils and complicates transplanting efforts. Young seedlings require partial shade or protection for their first two years, mimicking their natural understory environment. However, mature trees require full sun exposure in an orchard setting to achieve maximum fruit production.

Commercial Cultivation and Distribution

Modern commercial cultivation of the pawpaw is concentrated in areas that overlap with its native range, particularly in midwestern states like Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri. The transition from wild foraging to commercial farming is complicated by the fruit’s biology and post-harvest characteristics. Pawpaw fruit is delicate, bruising easily, and possesses a short shelf life of only two to three days at room temperature once fully ripe.

Growers must also contend with the tree’s pollination methods, as pawpaws are not self-pollinating and require a genetically different tree nearby for cross-pollination. The natural pollinators, primarily inefficient flies and beetles, often necessitate that growers resort to hand-pollination to ensure a reliable fruit set. Due to these constraints and the short shelf life, pawpaws are rarely found in major grocery chains. They are instead distributed through specialized farmers’ markets, local farm stands, and direct-to-consumer sales, or through dedicated mail-order nurseries selling improved, grafted cultivars.
