Santorio adapted the thermoscope for medical purposes, using a calibrated version to estimate a patient’s body temperature. His devices were cumbersome, often requiring the patient to breathe into the bulb to heat the air, and they took a long time to register a reading. Allbutt’s innovation reduced the instrument’s size to a portable six inches and, crucially, cut the measurement time down to only five minutes. Modern Adaptations and Digital Transition
The mercury-in-glass thermometer, which served medicine well for over a century, began to be phased out in the late 20th century due to safety concerns regarding mercury exposure if the glass broke. This shift paved the way for the widespread adoption of digital thermometers, which use electronic sensors like thermistors to measure temperature and display the result numerically. These devices are safer, faster, and easier to read, often providing results within seconds.
Further technological advancements led to the introduction of non-contact and specialized thermometers.
