In contrast, hard-shell gourds, such as bottle and birdhouse gourds (Lagenaria species), require a significantly longer season, often needing 120 to 180 days to fully mature. This extended period is necessary for the fruit to develop a dense, hard shell suitable for crafting, demanding an earlier start date. Lagenaria gourds are more tolerant of light frost once mature and can often be left on the vine until the stems dry and the fruit begins to cure.
