The ability to plant Amaryllis bulbs outside permanently depends entirely on the local climate’s winter severity. Since the bulbs are tropical and possess no frost tolerance, freezing temperatures will destroy the tissue and prevent regrowth. Permanent, year-round outdoor planting is generally limited to USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 11, where winter temperatures rarely dip below 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
In these warmer zones, the Amaryllis can be treated as a perennial, remaining in the ground to bloom reliably in the spring or early summer. Gardeners in colder regions (Zones 7 and below) must treat the plant as a seasonal annual. The bulbs can be planted outside for the summer growing season but must be dug up and stored indoors before the first hard frost of autumn.
