Optimal Fertilization Schedule
The timing of fertilization must align with the gardenia’s active growth cycle, which is prolonged by Florida’s warm climate. The ideal feeding schedule begins in early spring, generally around February in South Florida and March in North Florida, after the last risk of cold weather has passed. This initial application supports new growth and prepares the plant for its spring and summer bloom period.
For established gardenias, a common approach involves two to three granular fertilizer applications per year, or a more frequent schedule using slow-release formulas. Applying a granular product in early spring, followed by a second application in mid-summer, sustains the plant through the growing season. A slow-release product can be applied every six to eight weeks.
Continue feeding through the summer, potentially with a third application, as the warm season encourages continuous growth and flowering. This consistent nutrient supply helps maintain deep green leaves and supports new flower buds.
Stop fertilizing around late summer or early fall (September or October). Ceasing fertilization allows the plant to naturally slow its growth and “harden off” before cooler weather arrives. The presence of limestone, especially in Central and South Florida, often leads to alkaline soil with a pH above the gardenia’s preferred acidic range. When the soil pH is too high, certain micronutrients become chemically bound and unavailable for the plant to absorb through its roots.
The most common issue is iron chlorosis, a condition where the newest leaves turn bright yellow while the veins remain distinctly green. Although iron may be present in the soil, the high pH prevents the gardenia from accessing it, starving the plant of the nutrient required for chlorophyll production. Correcting this requires a targeted approach to make the iron available.
Correcting Iron Chlorosis
One effective solution is the application of chelated iron, which is iron chemically bonded to an agent that keeps it soluble even in alkaline soil. Chelated iron can be applied as a soil drench for a long-term fix or as a foliar spray for a rapid, temporary greening effect. For a more fundamental soil adjustment, elemental sulfur can be incorporated into the soil to gradually lower the pH over time, thus freeing up the naturally occurring iron for root uptake.
