Buffalo Grass (Bouteloua dactyloides) is a native, warm-season turf option valued for its exceptional drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements. Originating from the North American Great Plains, it is a popular choice for lawns in transition zones and arid climates. Successfully establishing a dense, healthy stand relies on precise timing to align seeding with the grass’s specific germination needs. Missing the optimal planting window can severely compromise the final turf quality and density due to its slow establishment rate.

Identifying the Optimal Seeding Window

Buffalo Grass is a warm-season species, requiring consistently high soil temperatures to break dormancy and begin germination. The ideal seeding window spans from late spring through early summer, typically May, June, and early July in most regions. This period ensures the seed is exposed to the prolonged warmth needed for successful sprouting.

The most reliable metric for planting is the soil temperature, not the calendar date, which varies widely by year and location. Buffalo Grass seed needs the top few inches of soil to reach a sustained temperature of at least 55°F to 60°F before germination begins. For the fastest and most uniform germination, soil temperatures should ideally be in the 60°F to 70°F range.
