Tulips require a sustained cold period, known as vernalization, which is essential for flower bud formation and subsequent spring blooming. Gardeners in warmer, Southern regions may need to wait until December or even early January to achieve the necessary soil temperature. Planting too early can expose the bulbs to warm, moist conditions, which increases the risk of fungal diseases and rot.
Preparing the Planting Site
Selecting the correct location is important to the long-term health of the tulip bulb. Tulips perform best in a site that receives full sun exposure, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, although some afternoon shade is tolerated in the warmest climates.
The greatest threat to a dormant bulb is poor water management, making soil drainage the most important factor to consider. Heavy clay soils should be amended with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted leaf mold, to improve porosity and aeration. Before planting, inspect the bulbs for signs of damage or mold; only firm, healthy bulbs should be placed into the prepared ground.
