The goal is to plant approximately six to eight weeks before the first anticipated hard freeze. This period allows sufficient time for the roots to anchor the bulb, which is a prerequisite for the necessary 12 to 16 weeks of cold dormancy that follows.
If bulbs are acquired early and the soil is still warm, store them in a cool, dry place with good air circulation until conditions are right. Gardeners in warm climates (USDA Zones 8 and above) must manually replicate the cold period. This involves chilling bulbs in a refrigerator for 12 to 16 weeks before planting in late fall or early winter. When chilling, keep bulbs away from ripening fruit, which releases ethylene gas that inhibits flower development.
Selecting the Right Location and Bulbs
A prime location for tulips receives full sun or bright light in the spring, providing the energy needed for the plant to flower. The most important environmental factor, however, is soil drainage, as tulips are highly susceptible to rot in waterlogged conditions. If the existing soil is heavy clay, amend it with organic material like compost or sand to improve porosity and prevent water from pooling around the bulb.
When selecting bulbs, look for specimens that are firm, plump, and feel heavy for their size. Avoid any bulbs that show signs of mold, soft spots, or significant cuts, as these indicate potential disease or damage. Larger bulbs produce more vigorous plants and larger flowers.
