The state has two distinct planting zones: North Georgia typically sees its last frost in April, while South and Coastal Georgia experience theirs earlier. Regardless of the frost date, the soil must be warm. Wait until the soil temperature reaches 60°F (15°C) to 70°F (21°C) at planting depth. Planting transplants is the most common method for home gardeners as it provides a jump start on the season.

Starting basil from seed requires even warmer conditions, making direct outdoor sowing less practical in early spring. Basil seeds germinate best when the soil temperature is consistently between 75°F and 85°F (24°C–29°C). Gardeners often start seeds indoors about six to eight weeks before their last expected frost date. This allows them to harden off the seedlings and transplant them once the air and soil are sufficiently warm.

Basil plants cannot tolerate drying out, so regular watering is necessary to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during peak summer temperatures. Apply moisture directly to the soil to avoid wetting the leaves, which can promote fungal diseases.

Pruning encourages the plant to grow outward and become bushier rather than tall and spindly. This process, called “pinching,” involves removing the central growing tip of the stem.
