The active growing period, spanning late spring through early summer, requires consistent nutritional support to fuel both vegetative growth and flower bud development. Depending on the product used, this means maintaining a steady schedule throughout this peak season. This delay allows the roots to establish themselves in the new soil without the stress of concentrated chemical salts.

Ceasing fertilization by this time is important because new growth stimulated by fertilizer in the fall will be soft and tender. This un-hardened growth is highly susceptible to damage from the first cold snaps or winter temperatures, potentially harming the entire plant.

Halting the nutrient supply signals the plant to slow its vegetative growth and begin preparing for winter dormancy. This preparatory phase ensures the existing foliage and stems have time to mature and harden off before the cold weather arrives.
