How Long Do Gnats Live?
The lifespan of a gnat, specifically the adult stage, is typically quite brief, often lasting one to two weeks. However, the term “gnat” encompasses several different small fly species, each with distinct adult lifespans.
For instance, adult fungus gnats, commonly found near houseplants, usually live for about 7 to 14 days. Drain flies, also known as moth flies, can survive as adults for up to two weeks, though male drain flies may live for only a few days while females can persist for a week or more. Fruit flies, often mistaken for gnats due to their similar size and nuisance factor, have a comparatively longer adult lifespan, typically ranging from 30 to 50 days. Biting midges, another group sometimes referred to as gnats, generally live as adults for one to two weeks, though some species may survive for several weeks under favorable conditions.
While the adult phase is short for most gnats, their overall life cycle, including immature stages, can span several weeks, contributing to their persistent presence.
What Makes Gnats Die?
Beyond natural aging, several factors contribute to a gnat’s demise, primarily related to environmental conditions and resource availability. Gnats thrive in specific temperature ranges, typically between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to extreme cold can significantly slow their development or lead to death, while high temperatures, such as those above 135 degrees Fahrenheit, are lethal to adult gnats.
Moisture is another critical element for gnat survival, particularly for their immature stages. The absence of sufficient moisture or overly dry conditions can prevent eggs from hatching and cause larvae to perish.
Similarly, the lack of appropriate food sources, such as decaying organic matter, fungi, or plant roots for larvae, and nectar or water for adults, directly impacts their ability to survive and reproduce. Natural predators like dragonflies, birds, fish, and various insects and arachnids also play a role in limiting gnat populations. Gnats, being weak fliers, can also succumb to accidental deaths from desiccation or physical impacts, and some species may be carried far from their breeding sites by wind.
Understanding the Gnat Life Cycle

Following hatching, the gnat enters its larval stage, which is often the longest phase of its life cycle. Larvae are worm-like and feed actively on fungi, algae, decaying plant material, or sometimes plant roots. This larval period can last from a few days to several weeks.
After accumulating enough energy, the larva transitions into the pupal stage, a non-feeding, transformative phase typically lasting a few days, during which the insect reorganizes its body for adulthood. Finally, the adult gnat emerges from the pupal casing, ready to mate and perpetuate the cycle.
