The procedure is typically painless, though some individuals might experience a brief stinging sensation when the drops are initially applied. Expected Effects and Their Duration
After eye dilation, two common effects are increased sensitivity to light (photophobia) and blurred vision, particularly for near tasks. This occurs because the enlarged pupils allow more light to enter the eye, and the eye’s natural focusing ability is temporarily impaired. The increased glare can make activities like driving challenging.
The duration of these effects can vary considerably among individuals. Generally, the effects of dilating drops last for about four to six hours. However, some people, including those with lighter eye colors or children, might experience prolonged dilation, with effects lasting up to 24 hours or even longer. To manage light sensitivity, wearing sunglasses is highly recommended. Arranging for someone to drive you home after the appointment is also advisable, as is avoiding activities that require sharp vision or fine focus until the effects subside.
Situations When Dilation May Be Avoided
While eye dilation is a routine and often recommended, there are specific situations where it might be avoided or approached with caution. One significant concern is the risk of precipitating an acute angle-closure crisis in individuals with narrow anterior-chamber angles. Dilating the pupil could potentially block the eye’s drainage system, leading to a sudden and dangerous increase in eye pressure.
Allergies to the specific dilating drops used are another reason to avoid the procedure. Allergic reactions can occur, presenting as eyelid swelling or redness. Patients with certain medical conditions, or those who have recently experienced ocular trauma or surgery, may also require careful consideration.
