The grinding depth typically ranges from 4 to 12 inches below the surface, depending on plans for the area. A minimum depth of 4 to 6 inches is usually sufficient for new sod or grass planting, while deeper grinding is required if a new tree or garden bed is planned for the exact spot. While highly effective, professional stump grinding comes with a cost and some noise.
The resulting wood chips are typically left behind and can be used as mulch in other garden areas, or the professional can remove them for an additional fee.
